LIEUTENANT-COLONEL JOHN BELL DUNSTERVILLE

Baptized 16th November 1785 - Died 8th July 1833

 

A son of Thomas Dunsterville and Lucy Bell, he was baptized in the church of St Charles the Martyr in Plymouth, Devon, on 16th November 1785, and died on 8th July 1833 in Mallgaum, Bombay Presidency, India. He married Sarah Lauriston Bruce on 20th April 1817 in Bombay. They had children:

1 Mary Dunsterville, born 20th March 1818 in Surat. She married Major-General Herbert Jacob.
2 Emily Boyd, born 14th May 1819 in Surat, and died there 25th June 1822.
3 John Bruce, born 8th November 1820 in Surat, and died in India in 1865. He married Mary McNeil on 1st February 1851.

He had had a son prior to his marriage:

William Henry, born 3rd November 1811 in Surat, India.

Sarah Lauriston Bruce, born on 15th February 1801 in Bombay, was the daughter of David Charles Bruce and Sarah his wife. She died 21st February 1823 in Surat. David Charles Bruce died and was buried in Surat 3rd May 1802.

John Bell Dunsterville entered the servbice of the East India Company as a cadet in 1800; he was commissioned Ensign on 22nd May 1801. Lieutenant 17th October 1801, Captain 1st January 1818, Major 8th September 1826, Lieutenant-Colonel 8th July 1830. As a Colonel he commanded the 18th Regiment Native Infantry.
