The son of Lieutenant-General Sir Ian Jacob, he was born on 9th June 1925. On 26th July 1948 he married Rosemary Elizabeth Ann, daughter of Leonard Shuter. They had children:

1 Timothy, who is married to Jocelyn Cox.
2 Nicholas Allan Swinton, born 25th June 1954. He is married to Frederika Doralayes.
