JOHN THOMAS

Born - Died

He was a judge in Calcutta. He had two daughters:

1 Mary, baptized 5th June 1783 in the parish of Charles, Plymouth, who married the Reverend Simon PIdsley.
2 Sarah, also baptized 5th June 1783.

Returning to England, as he went on board the ship in which he was to sail, his foot slipped and he fell from the gangway into the Hoogli and his body was never recovered. His wife was in England at the time, and one night she awoke and saw her husband standing by her bed dripping with water! Allowing for the time difference between India and England, it was the very hour he was drowned. So the story goes.

He had a portrait done of himself by Sir Joshua Reynolds, which was sold by John Pidsley, but there is a miniature made from it in the family. I am trying to trace it.

There is a family connection between John and John Thomas the Archdeacon of Bath.
